discover personal core values and strengths for authentic living

Identifying Core Values & Strengths

Have you ever felt like you’re moving through life without a compass? You’re making progress, certainly—but toward what? And using which of your many capabilities? This week, we’re diving deep into what truly matters: discovering your core values and harnessing your unique strengths to create a life aligned with your authentic self.

The Map That Guides Us

Imagine for a moment that your life is a journey across unknown terrain. Without a map, you might wander aimlessly, perhaps stumbling upon beautiful vistas or treacherous paths by chance alone. But what if you could chart your course with intention?

Your core values are that map—they are the principles that guide your decisions, shape your character, and define what success means to you, not what others have defined for you. When you gain clarity on these values, suddenly the fog lifts. Choices that once seemed complicated become surprisingly clear.

“But what are my core values?” you might wonder. Consider what consistently brings you joy, what you defend passionately, or what you’d stand for even if it cost you something. Is it connection? Growth? Creativity? Adventure? Compassion? Security? These aren’t just pretty words—they’re the bedrock upon which you can build a meaningful life.

Your Unique Contribution

While your values guide you, your strengths propel you forward. Each of us possesses a unique constellation of natural talents, learned skills, and character strengths. Yet how often do we take these for granted, or worse—focus instead on “fixing” our weaknesses?

What if the key to exceptional achievement and fulfillment isn’t becoming well-rounded, but rather becoming more of who you already are at your best?

Research consistently shows that people who use their signature strengths regularly experience more positive emotions, greater vitality, and higher life satisfaction. When you leverage what you’re naturally good at, you enter what psychologists call a “flow state”—that magical zone where time seems to disappear and work feels effortless.

Reframing Limitations

As you explore your values and strengths, you may encounter thoughts like:

  • “I don’t have any special talents.”
  • “It’s selfish to focus on what I want.”
  • “I can’t build a life around my values in today’s world.”

Let’s challenge these limiting beliefs. If you believe you lack special talents, could it be that you’ve been looking in the wrong places? Often, our greatest strengths are so natural to us we assume everyone shares them. The empathy you take for granted? That ability to see systems and patterns? That skill at bringing people together? These aren’t universal—they’re your superpowers.

And what if focusing on your values isn’t selfish but essential? Perhaps by honoring your authentic self, you’re actually positioning yourself to make your greatest contribution to others.

As for building a values-aligned life in today’s world—what evidence do you have that this is impossible? For every “reality” that seems to constrain you, there are countless examples of people who have created lives of meaning despite—or even because of—similar circumstances.

The Practice of Alignment

This week, I invite you to try these practical steps:

  1. Values Reflection: Set aside 30 minutes to list the principles that matter most to you. Then narrow them down to the five that feel essential to who you are.
  2. Strength Spotting: Each evening, identify one moment where you felt energized, effective, or “in the zone.” What strength were you using?
  3. Alignment Audit: Look at your calendar for the past month. How much time did you spend engaged in activities that reflect your core values and use your key strengths?
  4. Micro-Adjustments: Identify one slight change you could make this week to bring your daily life into greater alignment with your values and strengths.

Remember, this isn’t about dramatic overnight transformation. It’s about intentional, consistent shifts that gradually create a life that feels authentically yours.

Your Awakened Possibility

When you gain clarity on what matters most and leverage your personal strengths, you awaken to new possibilities. The question shifts from “What should I do with my life?” to “How can my unique combination of values and strengths serve a purpose larger than myself?”

This clarity doesn’t just benefit you—it ripples outward. In a world filled with people trying to be what they think they should be, your courage to be authentically yourself gives others permission to do the same.
